Philosophy of Only-U

Only-U (aka: Music Project 3) is a tangent of musical expression offered by David Sepe of the Phylum Chordata (David’s original music) and Strangelove (The “Alan” of the Depeche Mode Tribute) which combines the music of the 80’s, “DJ’d,” and performed instrumentally (on certain tracks throughout the set) with today’s technology. Essentially, Only-U is what David did in “his room” back in the 80’s (don’t go asking what else I did in my room back in the 80’s…I ain’t tell’n) when he was an impressionable teen listening to the New Wave sound and practicing his programming and musical chops. Oh sure, the Atari 1040 (and the STacy) has been replaced by a Mac Book Pro, the Steinberg 24 sequencer replaced by Logic 9 (I haven’t switched to X due to potential “migration issues), and the Casio replaced by a myriad of soft-synths. It’s 80’s music, some of it straight, some of it “chopped, processed, and mixed” in Logic, and some of it performed instrumentally along with the track by someone who was there! Expect album versions “mixed” with 80’s political and pop culture threads.  It’s more of a listening party as opposed to a dancing party…but if you’re so inclined…feel free to dance and have fun with friends out “on the dance floor” (Specials “Ghost Town” reference…hopefully no fighting…and if you “got that” you’ll see where I’m going with this project).

How hard-core 80’s is David…he can remember the first time he heard Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough” and commented to his friend about it the next day at his junior high school stating how he liked this new band…something called “Dee-Petch-E ” or “Dee-Peach-E” Mode. David will “spin” deeper album versions of bands such as Depeche Mode, YAZ, Erasure, DEVO, Oingo Boingo, The Smiths, The Cure, Thomas Dolby, OMD, Soft Cell, Duran Duran, Human League,  Missing Persons, Berlin, X, Slow Children, The Stray Cats, Josie Cotton, Sparks, the Go-Go’s, Blondie, Bow Wow Wow, Wall of Voodoo, etc…I didn’t even mention U2, the B-52’s, Siouxsie, Adam and the Ants, Billy Idol, Squeeze, ABC, Flock of Seagulls, Talk Talk …and a few dozen or so more…So much music and only “x” amount to play it…man!

This project is truly about “how I would DJ an 80’s set if I we’re a DJ, DJ-ing an 80’s set.” It’s about paying tribute to the music that meant so much to me while I was “coming of age” and all that… I hope to bring the pitches, tones, and harmonies (music) of the 80’s to the multitudes (masses) with a bit of a twist…
